Salty snack products have undergone a major transformation recently with various innovations in textures, ingredients and flavors used. New product concepts are joining other well established alternatives. Another key trend includes increased focus on the type of oil used, with avocado, sunflower and sunseed oils being promoted as healthier varieties. Good Health Natural Foods Kettle Style Avocado Oil Potato Chips launched recently in Taiwan claim to be “kettle cooked in all natural pure avocado oil which is high in antioxidants and monounsaturated fats (the good fat!)”. As far as salt is concerned, products which claim to use sea or rock salt as a purported healthier form of salt have increased in number in recent times, along with lightly salted claims. The ZDS (Zentralfachschule der Deutschen Süßwarenwirtschaft) deals with these and other trends at the congress of BISCUITS & SNACKS on 8th and 9th November 2011 in Solingen, Germany.
