The Research Association of the German Food Industry (Forschungskreis der Ernährungsindustrie, FEI), Bonn, Germany, stated in a press release that there is ongoing research due to the finding of toxic substances in situ in cereals. With this system, mycotoxins can be detected simultaneously and quickly. Currently, scientists from the Munich University and the TU Munich are working on it: They have developed a basic technology with which different analytes (e. g. antibiotics or micro organism) within a computer controlled mini laboratory may be evidenced on a biosensor. According to the press release, the technology stands out due to very short test times, a wide detection spectrum and cost-efficient application. The objective of the project is to enable the proof of, at present, six different mycotoxins from different types of grain within 20–25 min with a fully automatic biosensor system. Consumers as well as all kinds of companies involved with milling and processing grain will be able to benefit from the results by 2013.
