Stevia approved in Europe

As of 11th November 2011, the Commission Regulation (EU) No 1131/2011 has approved steviol glycosides – extracted from the leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni plant - as new food additives. The EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) concluded in its safety report of March 2010 that the sweetener is safe and established an acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 4 mg/kg body weight/day. The regulation comes into force on 3rd December 2011, and so the use of Stevia is now authorized at appropriate levels for 31 different food categories including soft drinks, desserts and table top sweeteners. Stevia is not allowed to be used in any bakery products with the exception of "essoblaten". As an additive, steviol glycosides can now be identified by the E number 960.
