The British bakery chain Greggs plc, Newcastle Upon Tyne, recently presented its expansion plans for 2012. Chief Executive Ken McMeikan wants to open approx. 90 more shops in 2012 in the typical style of Greggs, i.e. with sweet and salty snacks as well as coffee to take away. McMeikan stated that two thirds of the branches are likely to be at out-of shopping-zones, at gas and train stations, airports or in industrial areas. Furthermore, he said at a press conference in mid January 2012 that it was the company’s aim to open two or three of its new concept Greggs Moment outlets over the next year.  This is a new format from Greggs, with the emphasis more on coffee-shops (see at www.greggsmoment.co.uk). In terms of its production facilities, Greggs wants to buy a new bakery in Wiltshire in 2013; the company is searching for suitable properties in Scotland, East Anglia and also on the south coast. According to its homepage, Greggs is the leading bakery retailer in the UK. Up until 31st December 2011, the company had an overall store total of 1,571.
