European yeast producers appalled by EU sugar policy

Currently, on the European sugar market, there are signs of a shortage of sugar, molasses and subsidized industrial sugar. The Confederation of EU Yeast Producers (COFALEC) has been critical of the EU Commission for recently taking 500,000 t of industrial (out-of-quota) sugar – typically used by EU yeast suppliers for the organic industry – and releasing it on to the in-quota market. COFALEC indicates that just as little understanding has been shown by the commission to allow the export of 1.4m t sugar onto the world market.
